"From the author, Robert W. Seabloom: I taught Mammalogy (and other wildlife and ecology courses) at the University of North Dakota for many years. I have also taught related courses at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station, University of Minnesota (Crookston), and University of California (Davis). In addition, I have conducted and supervised graduate research on a wide variety of regional mammals ranging from shrews and other small mammals to big game, including mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and elk. During my career, I was approached several times about writing a book on mammals but could not afford the time due to the demands of teaching and research. Subsequent to retirement, I was again approached by personnel of the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (Jamestown), North Dakota Game and Fish Department, and U. S. Forest Service about developing write-ups on ecology and life histories of North Dakota mammals. These accounts would prove useful to regulatory agencies for environmental planning, impact statements, etc. Upon completion of this several-year project, I was encouraged to develop a book. "Mammals of North Dakota" was subsequently published by the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies in 2011. This book was the first comprehensive account of the mammals of North Dakota since Vernon Bailey's (1926) "A Biological Survey of North Dakota: I. Physiography and Life Zones; II. The Mammals," North American Fauna No. 49 published by the U. S. Bureau of Biological Survey, forerunner of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition to the species accounts, there are taxonomic keys to skulls and skins, known Native American names of mammals, sections on North Dakota habitats, the fossil mammalian fauna of the state, investigating mammals, species potentially occurring in North Dakota, and a comprehensive list of references. I know of no other state mammal publication including Native American names and a section on fossil mammals. In the seven-year period since the first edition, there have been 24 confirmed shifts in the ranges of species (that's more than one fourth of the fauna!) and three new species (Fringed Myotis, Wolverine, Water Shrew) documented in the state. New knowledge of life histories is included, such as recent discovery of overwintering bats in western North Dakota. This has necessitated extensive rewrites and additions of species accounts, range maps, taxonomic keys, and references. In view of the usage of the book by professionals, students, and serious naturalists I believe an updated revision is warranted"--
