Moidl is a farmer's daughter from the Hohenhauser Farm in Hintertux in the Zillertal region of Tyrol. Her close bonds with her family and the farm are her lifeblood, and the various blows they are dealt by fate only serve to make these ties stronger. She remains unmarried, labouring day after day from early morning to late at night on the farm.
At a market, she comes across Hermann, an orphan of only twelve years of age who is desperately seeking a job in order to survive and is passed around like an unwanted animal.
