In August of 2017, following his grandfather's funeral, James Roslyn discovers a decades-old handwritten note hidden inside a book. Written by his grandfather, Hugh Casey, the note describes a mysterious village deep within the Northwoods of Wisconsin, located on an Ojibwe reservation and hidden from the outside world.
In his youth, Hugh discovered the village by accident and was invited to spend several days among its people. Those few days-and the village itself-forever altered his beliefs and the course of his life. Yet despite longing to return, Hugh never did, even asking James to take him there just months before his death.
Haunted by regret and navigating his own personal struggles, James becomes determined to find the village. He hopes to honor his grandfather, say goodbye properly, and confront the mistakes he believes have shaped his own life.
James convinces his older brother, Alan Roslyn, to join him. Together, they load their car with fishing and camping gear and travel north in search of the reservation. When they arrive at the hidden settlement known as Aanakwad, they camp along the river and plan to stay for seven days. But nothing in Aanakwad is as it seems.
Told from James's perspective, The Mighty Esox recounts a profound week spent in the village-where he rediscovers love, questions everything he once believed, develops an obsessive pursuit of a state-record-sized fish, and unknowingly becomes a central figure in a supernatural mystery that only reveals itself in hindsight.
