Zusammenfassung

When the world forgot us, we were never meant to disappear. In early twentieth-century Germany - a country of music, poetry, and promise - four young friends form a hiking group called Blau-Weiss. They sing. They argue. They dream of building a future rooted in identity and purpose. At first, the changes are easy to dismiss. A comment. A poster. A question asked too precisely. Then the air shifts. What begins as youthful idealism becomes something steadier - a deliberate decision to stand visible before the world decides who they are. As history tightens, they are forced into impossible choices: separation, disappearance, survival without certainty. A wooden bead carries a promise across camps and borders. A child is hidden to live. A search refuses to end. From Germany to Haifa, this is not only a story of catastrophe. It is a story of formation. Of identity chosen before it is tested. Of love carried across generations. Of memory that refuses to be erased. Because hatred changes its language. And survival is only the beginning.

Rabbi Paul D. Caplan is a writer, researcher, and storyteller whose work explores memory, identity, and the moral courage that endures across generations. Born in Buffalo, New York, he studied at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and later at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, where he earned a Master of Hebrew Letters, was ordained as a rabbi, and received an honorary doctorate. His academic work focused on Holocaust responsa literature, including a thesis on moral decision-making in the Kovno Ghetto-an encounter with history that never released its hold. The origins of When the World Forgot Us trace back to a graduate-level course taught entirely in Hebrew on Zionist youth movements before the Holocaust. It was there that names like Blau-Weiss and Wandervögel first took root-not as abstractions, but as living communities of young people preparing for a future they could not yet see. Over the years, Rabbi Caplan had the privilege of knowing and learning from Elie Wiesel, whose life and work reinforced a lasting conviction: memory must not remain confined to scholarship. It must be carried forward through story. Four decades after completing his thesis, he returned to these questions-not to write history, but to tell a human story shaped by it. He lives in Florida with his wife, Linda, and is the proud father of Shira and Eden.
