The werewolf traced through the sagas, the French trials, the medical records and the case of a real man who confessed to it in 1598. Baring-Gould was a country parson and wrote the standard nineteenth-century book on the subject before the folklore societies existed. This edition is bound with sixty plates of painting, among them works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Jean-François Millet, Laurits Andersen Ring and Yrjö Ollila, dating from 1822 to 1923.
